- DATE: Saturday July 11
- TIME: 8 AM to 5 PM
- WHAT: Tour the mines and facilities of two local companies that manufacture clay-containing or clay-derived products. Geologists will explain the related geology and company representatives and scientists will explain the manufacturing facilities and products produced.
- Azomite Mineral Products
- This company mines a 38.6 million year old volcanic ash deposit, which consists mostly of microporous volcanic glass, as well as several minerals, including montmorillonite. This combination of materials results in some fascinating properties that enable some of Azomite’s common uses.
- Poultry feed additive. A small amount of Azomite mixed with the feed mash in a pellet mill can significantly reduce energy costs.
- Soil additive. As a soil additive used for water retention and remineralization, Azomite can drastically improve the growth and yield of certain crops.

- Ionic Mineral Technologies
- IMT mines halloysite-rich clay, which they use for a couple purposes.
- Halloysite is stripped of Al and reduced to form Si-metal nanotubes. These can be used to drastically improve the performance of graphite anodes in Li-ion batteries.
- IMT is exploring the possibility of extracting REE from the clay deposits.
